Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Influences My Thoughts

Mohandas Gandhi created his own belief system and stuck to it throughout many different events in is life. He participated in the Civil Rights movement of South Africa, the Independence of India, World War II and he spent time in jail for his disobedience. Personally I am very impressed with his ability to encompass different aspects of religions and his drive to uphold his morals throughout all his endeavors. I was impressed with the fact, that no matter how poorly he was treated, he didn’t waver and he stood up for what he believed in. Personally I do not believe that I or anyone I know would not be able to participate in the social protests Gandhi did. He fasted to prove his points, and waited until people listened.

To put it into perspective, many people who consider themselves “religious” in our modern day society do not follow their religion with the same fervor or intent that Gandhi did. In reality people skim the surface of their religion, only doing the bare minimum to show they are “believers.” As shown in the documentary Religulous , many people can’t even explain to someone more than the basic knowledge of their religion. When researching a leader to discuss, I could not find many leaders that weren’t corrupt, or used their religions to look good.

Although I do not believe in what Gandhi believed in, I love the idea of his “religion.” His way of incorporating ideals from all different religions is a great idea, in my mind for those who haven’t found their way yet. It helps people find who they want to be through what they want to live by.
